Description

According to Bramwell, op. cit., p. 147, the subject was "a patient suffering from chronic dementia" who was formerly a patient in the Royal Asylum, Morningside, "she was, when my artist Mr Williamson painted her, an inmate of the Craiglockhart Poorhouse". Bramwell also prints further commentary on the plate by Dr George M. Robertson

The artist named as J. Williamson was presumably the John Williamson recorded as a portrait- and figure-painter in J. Johnson and A. Greutzner, The dictionary of British artists 1880-1940, Woodbridge, Suffolk, 1976. Between 1885 and 1895 he exhibited four works at the Royal Academy, one at the Royal Society of British Artists, and eleven at the Royal Scottish Academy. From 1885 he gave an Edinburgh address, and from 1891-92 an address at 5 West Hampstead Studios, Sherrif Rd., London NW
