    was authorized by the Court of Quarter Sessions and the Town Council, either to resist such claim altogether, to submit the same to arbitration, or to compromise the matter in such manner as should seem consistent with justice. We had much correspondence with Mr. Warmington and his Solicitor thereon for several months, and ultimately compromised the claim by paying one half in August last. Dr. Sherlock, in his last Report, has fully stated the com¬ plete success which attended the plan adopted for supplying the establishment with water, and the experience of the past year enables us to express our opinion with confidence, that there will always be an ample quantity for all purposes, notwithstanding the increased demand by the extension of Buildings and additional number of Patients. In January last, we received estimates for the Recreation- hall and Store-rooms, mentioned in our last Report; the lowest was by Messrs. Wood & Sons, amounting to £2,050, which was accepted. Mr. Rowe subsequently reported to us that Warming and Gas-fittings would be required, at a cost, as he estimated, of £32 for warming, and J?120 for gas- fittings. During the progress of the new works, Dr. Sherlock also informed your Committee, that Cisterns for hot and cold Water would be required in the new female ward, to contain 1500 gallons each. Also, that provision should be made by providing a space for the enlargement of the present oven. We consulted Mr. Rowe thereon, who reported that it was necessary that both should be done during the progress of the work; and the necessity being obvious, we ordered the same, —the cisterns at a cost of £93. and the space for enlarging the oven at a cost of £25. The new ward will also require a boundary fence, to be supplied with gas, and also with furniture, bedding, &c., to accommodate 40 Patients, as soon as the buildings are completed.
