Description
Soldiers clamber up the steep hill towards the walled city some falling as they are struck by enemy attack; the walls of the city extend to the left and right of the print; a group of armoured soldiers holding their spears upright stand waiting in the wings bottom right. In the style of Hans Weiditz or Hans Burgmair who designed the woodcut illustrations to The Weiss König (White King), one of three books which Maximilian commissioned to chronicle his life and court.

Lettering
Bears German lettering on verso relating to 'PapstJulius' (Pope Julius II) and 'Kaiser Maximilianus' (Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I) according to the lettering on the verso of the print. Julius II was pope from 1503 to 1513 and earned a reputation as the 'warrior king' for his ambitious policies during the Italian Wars which significantly increased the power and centralization of the Papal States. Maximilian I (1459 - 1519) was the archduke of Austria, German king, and Holy Roman emperor (1493–1519) who made his family, the Habsburgs, dominant in 16th-century Europe.
