About this work
Description
The Citadel is about a doctor's personal and professional struggles in the 1930s. Manson (Robert Donat) starts his career in a Welsh mining village but quickly runs up against the medical establishment and the miners' friendly society when he tries to expose the cause of a severe cough that is disabling many miners. The futility of Manson's altruistic efforts, and the influence of his more material-minded colleagues gradually steer him away from his humanitarian goals and into an exclusive London private practice, offering bogus treatment for imaginary diseases. It takes a shattering crisis to resolve Manson's future.
