    As Chairman, [ know all sorts of rumours have been floating about that our Hospital may become a County Council Hospital, or a State-aided one. May I at once dispel that illusion. Lo put the matter shortly, the County Council approached the Committee in that they wished to make the Hospital one of the four base Hospitals of Essex, and the answer of the Committee was that they were prepared to help in any way they could, provided all the principles for which the Voluntary Hospitals stand are maintained. Two or three conferences have been held, but so far nothing has vet been definitely settled. The whole question really boils down to this, that the County Council may provide a certain amount of capital to build anv necessarv extensions, and so the Countv Council must in addition provide the requisite cost of maintenance as well. Of course at the same time the Countv Council will want i/ representation on the Committee, which is quite natural if they are providing the funds. The resignation of the Secretary, Mr. Alfred G. Buck, was received v7ith sincere regret, after thirty-four years’ service, and the Committee would call the attention of the Governors and Subscribers to the details of his service which appear on page 16. So ends another year of our great work carried on so well by the large band of voluntary workers, for whose help the Committee cannot thank them enough.
