Miscellaneous documents relating to Napoleon I, Emperor of the French

1. Letter from Jean Gaspard [Johann Caspar] Lavater (1741-1801) to Bonaparte requesting withdrawal of French occupying forces from Switzerland, for the relief of the population. Zurich, 26 November 1799.

2. Letter from [Jean-Baptiste Joseph] Delambre (1749-1822) to Bonaparte covering his report [not present] on the 'Télégraphe intime' of citoyen Alexandre. An XI, 1803.

3. Report by [Gaspard] Monge (1746-1818) to Napoleon I concerning [Alexander von] Humboldt (1769-1859), giving extensive biographical information about him and his scholarly and scientific credentials. Paris, 4 March 1808.

4. Petition from Louis-Alexandre Berthier (1753-1815), Prince of Wagram and Neuchâtel, signed 'Alexandre', to Napoleon I, requesting leave of absence for reasons of recovering his health for 'Capitaine du Génie' Montauban, who had been badly wounded at the siege of Lerida. Paris, 20 September 1810. Countersigned by Napoleon ('Nap') with his approval, St Cloud, 21 September 1810.

5. Deed of confirmation by Napoleon I of articles of agreement between Hugues-Bernard Maret (1763-1839), Duke of Bassano, French diplomat, and Georg Ernst Levin von Wintzingerode (1752-1834), ambassador of Jérôme Bonaparte, King of Westphalia, in Paris, concerning the administration of justice in the kingdom of Westphalia. Signed by Napoleon ('Nap') at his headquarters at Dresden, 14 May 1813, and countersigned by Bassano and Pierre Daru (1767-1829), secretary of state.

Acquisition note

Nos. 1 to 3 were purchased from Degrange, Paris, in April 1934 (accs.67102, 67104 and 67106); 4 and 5 were purchased from Charavay, Paris, in May 1932 (acc.65655).

Ownership note

No. 4 was formerly in the Bibliotheca Lindesiana, dispersed at auction by Sotheby's in 1925
