Again, the velocity of diffusion through a porous partition will vary jointly as N and the mean value of u where u is the component of the velocity re- solved at right angles to the partition. This latter can be shown to be proportional to J^V2. There- fore the rate of diffusion is proportional to NV. Now, at any one temperature and pressure, N is the same for all gases, hence the diffusion velocity is proportional to V, and therefore to ^or> what is the same thing, to / -?— = A , where p is the den- ° \/ Not v p sity. This is Graham’s Law. We might introduce many more intei’esting deduc- tions, but sufficient has been said to show that the kinetic theory of gases, although experience cannot actually prove it to be true, very well explains the more important phenomena connected with gases, and until any serious objection is brought forward, we can be content with this hypothesis.
