    Moreover, he was well qualified sociologically. As he told an audience irL.1882, it had been his fate to be familiar with almost every form of society, from the uncivilised savage of Papua and Australia and the civilised savages of the slums and dens of the poverty-stricken parts of great cities, to those who, perhaps, are occasionally the somewhat over-civilised members of our upper ten thousand. And when Huxley spoke, with full warrant, of his equipment in Vertebrate Anatomy, he included therein knowledge of the apparatus of the mind as well as of the mechanism of the body. Consequently, his demonstration of the essentially indistinguishable structural likeness between man and his nearest congeners, the four anthropoid apes—the Orang-utan, the Chimpanzee, the Gorilla, and the Gibbon—is followed by the conclusion that the attempt to draw a psychical distinction is futile, and that even the highest faculties of feeling and of intellect begin to germinate in lower forms of life. Forty-five years have passed since Evidences as to Man's Place in Nature appeared.
