The chief cause iSj no doubt^ to be found in the evil heart of unbelief—in the /' natural man re- ceiving not the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him, and in the car- nal heai-t being enmity against God, and not subject to the law of God—men love darkness more than light, because their deeds are evil. We cannot but admit the truth of Dr. Bateman's remark, that medical men have been generally sceptical, yet there have been many very eminent exceptions—a considerable number of members of the medical profession have been remarkable for unaffected piety, intelligent zeal, and entire de- votedness to the cause of Christ, who have already entered on the rest which remaineth for the people of God. Among others, may be mentioned the late Dr. Yanderkemp, a learned Dutch physician, who was originally an officer in the Dutch service, afterwards studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, and, having been brought by the grace of God to a saving knowledge of the truth as it is in Jesus, was constrained by the love of Chi'ist^' to leave the comforts of civilized life and to go out, under the auspices of the London Missionary Society, to the poor heathen Caffres in the South of Africa ; among whom he laboured for many years with much, success; and at last finished his course with joy amidst these wild tribes, to whose spiritual improve- ment he had devoted his life, and entered into the joys of his Lord.
