    about sixty Patients. It is furnished with a complete Electric Plant, and has its own Laundry and other offices. The staff consists of a Matron, Home-sister, and five Nurses, and a Medical Man in the locality is appointed to visit it regularly. The entire cost, including purchase of Freehold, Building, Electric Plant, Water-supply, Laundry, Furniture, and the laying out of the Grounds, amounted to £34,559 11s. 9d. It should be noted that the Spicer Fund is devoted towards the expenses of maintenance. The Convalescent Home has proved of inestimable value to the Hospital, enabling many Patients, especially from the Surgical Wards, to leave the Hospital at a much earlier date than they otherwise could, and resort to a purer air where their convalescence is consolidated. Its advantages have been still further extended by the erection in the grounds of a Pavilion for the “open-air ” treatment of phthisis. This Pavilion was completed in 1902, at “Open- a cost of £809 11s. 3d. It provides accommodation for four Male Patients, ^eatmeiu who are allowed to stay there for a period of six months. XVII. The benefits which the Founders and Supporters of The Middlesex Religious Hospital designed to confer would be incomplete were the Charity confined ^^SCra‘ to the mitigation of the bodily suffering of the inmates. Their spiritual wants are not to be neglected ; and the duty of furthering this important object is committed to a Chaplain, a Clergyman of the Church of England, in Priest’s orders, whose daily care it is to direct and assist the devout aspirations of those who are convalescent, and to adminster to others that consolation by which the weariness and depression of protracted sickness are best supported, and the bitterness of death assuaged. Patients who are not members of the Church of England are visited bv their own Spiritual Advisers, who are afforded every facility for ministering to the members of their Communion. A Roman Catholic Priest attached to the Church of St. Charles in Ogle Street and a Sister of Mercy attend regularly to console and instruct such Catholics as may be undergoing treatment in the Wards. From the earliest date Divine Service has been held in the Wards and The elsewhere, but a few years ago a movement was started towards providing a Cliapei. special building to be dedicated solely to the service of Worship. The prime mover in the realization of this laudable intention was Mr. George Lawson, who in 1882 generously guaranteed the expense of erecting a suitable Building. His offer was thankfully accepted, but considerable difficulty was experienced in finding a site which should not encroach upon the Garden. The consideration of this question presented a favourable opportunity for instituting a reform, the need for which had been long felt. Frequently attention had been called to the grave objections arising from the Post- Mortem Room being located under the roof of the General Hospital, and the importance of its removal was generally admitted.
