About this work

Description

Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus drag Christ's body towards a tomb. The four women are Mary Magdalene, Mary (mother of James the less and Joses), Salome ("who ..., when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him") and the Virgin. One of the women (probably Mary Magdalene) stares ahead into Christ's lance wound while she holds Christ's pierced hand in hers. In the distance on the right stands an empty cross and a ladder; to the left one of the crucified criminals still hangs there
