A boy in the left foreground wears knee-breeches, suggesting that the setting is that of the poem Nattvardsbarnen (German "Die Abendmahlskinder) by Esaias Tegnér (1782-1846). This edition of the poem is advertised as a gift to confirmands, suggesting that the children in the engraving are first communicants
