Description
'On the utility of studying the Greek and Latin writers of antiquity on the subject of medicine'. Inscription and label on f. 1r. 'Dr Falconer. Falconer on the utility of studying the ancients'; inscription on f. 1v. 'Read before the Medical Society of London 1788'. Corrections to the text and additional quotations appear to be in William Falconer's hand; the main text may be in another hand, possibly that of his son Thomas Falconer (1772-1839), physician and classical scholar.

Acquisition note
The manuscript collection of the Medical Society of London, of which this material formerly was part, was purchased by the library at Wellcome Collection in 1984.
Biographical note
The author was almost certainly William Falconer (1744-1824), a prominent member of the Medical Society of London and a prolific author on classical and other subjects.
Ownership note
Inscription on f. 1v. 'Presented to the Society May 14, [18]34 by Greville Jones, who found it amongst the private papers of the late William Chamberlaine'.
