About this work

Description

View of a harbour from a hill overlooking the walled garden of a villa. This was identified by Thomson as Hong Kong. However, Mr John Warner has suggested that it is not Hong Kong but one of the Treaty Ports, and Dr Howard Scott has identified it as taken from Ku-lang Su (Koolansoo, Gulangyu) Island looking towards Amoy (Xiamen)

This is one of a collection of same-size contact prints made, in 1981, from John Thomson's original negatives. The glass negatives, made between 1868 and 1872, were purchased from Thomson by Sir Henry Wellcome in 1921 and are now in the Wellcome Institute Library
