Biographical note

James Matthews Duncan was a Scottish obstetric physician. A Fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and London, Duncan was President of the Obstetrical Society of Edinburgh, 1873-1875. After lecturing in midwifery in Edinburgh, he moved to London in 1877 to take up the post of midwifery lecturer and obstetric physician to St. Bartholomew's Hospital. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1883.
