In offering our New Paper to the Public, we feel bound to slate some of the motives which have influenced our undertaking. We shall not commence by decrying our contemporary Journals, nor de- duct from any praise which may be their due ; hut, at the same time, we feel we can hazard little when we assert, that many of the Jour- nals now in circulation reflect no honour either on the sentiments or the talents of their conductors. We shall not attempt to calculate the probabilities of success;—that must depend on our exertions. One thing we will assert, that we set out with perfect independence, which we will maintain at every hazard.
