About this work

Description

This film, based at Mimosa Cottage at Parson's State Hospital in Kansas, demonstrates a systematic application of behaviour modification techniques in an attempt to rehabilitate institutionalized 'trainable retarded girls.' This is done by a detailed system of token awards for desirable behaviour based on the rules of contemporary social acceptability. The film includes much footage of mentally disabled girls aged between 8 and 21 with various kinds of disability not differentiated in the film other than the statement that their IQ tests range between 25 and 50.
