About this work

Description

Corrector analyticus artis posthumae Thomae Harriotti. Preceded by 'Observationes et Fainómena Cometae nuper exorti [sic] factae Oxoniae' and 'Sententiae Academiorum Oxoniensium de Cometa' 1618. Holograph transcriptions from the originals in Sion College Library, made by J. O. Halliwell [-Phillipps]. Inside the upper cover is an inscription in pencil by Halliwell-Phillipps: 'The originals are dated about A.D. 1620. The Corrector by N.T. is Nathaniel Torporley, and is very curious in relation to the new [mathematical and astronomical] discoveries of Vieta (i.e. François Viète [1540-1603]) and their influence in England.'

Ownership note

On the first unfoliated leaf, by the same hand in ink: 'I copied these myself from the curious MS. originals in the Library of Sion College, London. J. O. Halliwell': the signature is in pencil. Above this is the Library stamp 'Bibliotheca Halliwelliana', and above this inscribed in ink: 'MS. Bib. Hall. No. 20.'

From the Library of Prince Baldassare Boncompagni (1821-1894). The Boncompagni manuscripts were catalogued by Enrico Narducci (Catalogo di manoscritti ora posseduti da D. Baldassarre Boncompagni), whose catalogue was published in two editions, 1862 and 1896, which differed in both content and numbering scheme. Accepted practice is therefore to cite both numbers, giving the 1896 number first followed by the earlier number in parentheses. This item is therefore known as Boncompagni 171 (45). On the back is a pasted-on label inscribed 'B. Boncompagni 171.'
