![2. PREFACE The Latin American Collection, which forms part of a larger collection on medicine in the Americas as a whole, is an amalgam of three important collections in Latin American medicine. The collection made by Sir Henry Wellcome [1853-1936] resulted from his manufacturing and commercial activity which early focused his attention on the history of therapeutically active plants native to the Americas. Wellcome's continued interest led him in 1927 to purchase the third collection of Dr. Nicolás León [1859—1929], the Mexican obstetrician, historian of medicine, bibliophile, bibliographer, and sometime Director of the Museo Nacional de México. Finally, the Wellcome Trustees acquired in 1962 the collection of Dr. Francisco Guerra [b. 1916], bibliophile, bibliographer, and historian of Latin American medicine, whose remarkable knowledge of the bibliography of Latin American colonial medicine brought the collection as a whole to fruition. For a number of years after its acquisition and during the tenure of a Wellcome Fellowship, Dr. Guerra worked on the arrangement of the collection and on the documentation of a card and printed catalogue to it. Without Dr. Guerra's enthusiasm and devotion this collection, and therefore of course the present catalogue by Mr. Robin Price, would not exist. Peter O.
