<p>He is wearing a monocle and a dress, and  stands with his hands on his hips. This is not a photograph of a small boy dressed as a girl, but of a teenager dressed as an infant: in the nineteenth century, all children under the age of about five wore dresses. The actor shown here, Edward Garrett, was about fourteen years old at the time he appeared in the farce 'The little stranger', at the Criterion Theatre, London, in 1906, for which this card was published as publicity.</p>
