Description

Surgeon at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, particularly known for the operation for bladder-stone. Pupil of Percival Pott, whose daughter he married and whose literary works he later published

Under, Painted by Sir Wm Beechey R A. Engraved by R Dunkarton. Sir James Earle, F.R.S. Surgeon Extraordinary to the King &c &c. Published March 10th 1810 by R Dunkarton 452 Strand. … This distinguished surgeon died in Hanover-square, Sept. 22, 1817, aged 72 years; he was author of many works on subjects connected with his profession."--Chaloner Smith, loc. cit.

In the background, a library of large volumes, of which three are lettered "Hydrocele", "Curv'd spine", and "Potts works"
