About this work

Description

Chloe, 24, is bipolar; Richard, 24, has OCD; Michelle, 27, hears voices; Alastair Campbell, 57; Janet, 42, has an 'emotionally unstable personality disorder', she describes the yo-yoing of her emotions. Alastair Campbell describes how he had an episode at a party conference and ended up naked in a police cell. Janet describes how she experienced post-natal depression. Jacqui, 32, describes her delusions. Rohan, 42, describes his anger and history of manic behaviour including spending his whole student grant in less than half a day. Frank Bruno, 54, found that his bipolar surfaced when his boxing career was over. He was sectioned. Richard and Chloe first received diagnoses in their late teens. The participants describe some of the life events which became catalysts for a deterioration in their mental health. The young people described how frightening their first experience of being in a psychiatric ward was. A young woman describes how she was assaulted, became stuck in the moment and experienced PTSD. Life with the conditions, even with a diagnosis and treatment is challenging. The participants have integrated some of the lived experience of mental health with their professional careers, for example, Michelle now runs Hearing Voices, Ireland.
