Sir James Wylie obtained his M.D. at King's College, Aberdeen in 1794, and entered the Russian service as senior surgeon of the Eletsky Regiment. In 1798 he was appointed physician to the Imperial Court, and in 1800 founded the Medico-Chirurgical Society at St. Petersburg. By 1804 he was President of the Medical Academy of that city. He served in the campaign against Napoleon in 1812, and was appointed physician to the Tsar Alexander I [see the Dictionary of National Biography].
