About this work
Description
Prof. Bob Williamson (St. Mary's Hospital, London) and others explain the Human Genome Project (HUGO) and its implications for medical research, especially in relation to the hereditary diseases of cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and some forms of heart disease. Two critics of HUGO, Prof. Richard Lewontin (Harvard University) and Prof. Steven Rose (Open University) present their case against the project, which includes the fear that it will bring about the return of eugenics. Among the other contributors are Dr. John Sulston (Sanger Centre, Hinxton Hall, Cambridge), Sir Walter Bodmer (Imperial Cancer Research Fund) and the two scientists who discovered the structure of DNA, Profs. Francis Crick and James Watson.
