About this work

Description

Perhaps the Battle of Monmouth (Monmouth, New Jersey) in June 1778. A woman depicted as firing a cannon may represent Molly Pitcher, who was reputed to have taken her husband's place at the cannon after he had been wounded. Right (and left background), soldiers hold the standard of the Stars and Stripes. Left foreground, a standard bearing the Union Jack.
