WHatDame Bwmor Said thi« MoiMins of I^eavltt Alley aad Hi« I>yi«S Coiifession-Wliat Alley Says atooxxt A rumor which gamed an extensive circula- tioa this forenooa was, that Leavitt Alley, who was tried some time since for the murder of Abijah Ellis, was in a dying condition at his home, 28 Emerald street, and that in anticipa- tion of passing over the river, he had made a confession of the murder. The rumor m some of Its details was quite descriptive as to how the butchery was accompUshed but unon investigation as to the source of the reoort no hiug cSula be obtained by a Heeald reuor er? wU after arduous labor, paid a visit to the residence of Mr. Alley.. The family of Mr Alley, a shoi-t time previous to the call, had bte^ made ac^uaiuted with the report 1 .nd rl^ived the interviewer with the greatest affability and cordiality. Mr. Alley was found to be in about as good health as any man could eniov, except that he was sulienng with a s -ht cold. Upon being interrogated upon his lupposed confession, he said he wasnotawa*e of living any to make; and bo far as the mur- der char|ed to nim was concerned, he was af innocent of the crime as when he was bo'-n He deeply deprecatea the contmual attempts of suspicious and unfeeling people to pSate him and his family by rculating reports agai, St his character, and hoped yet to^ive Ions enough to see the public sat.shed of their mistake m suspecting hmi of being a murderer. He appeared as cool and co lected S^when he stood bis trial two years ago, and mion the suggestion of ins wife, who was pres- ent dunng thi conversation and quite ag.taled he expressed the hope that when he should die that a Hkiiale reporter would be by has bwlside, and give authentically to the world aiVaD^wer as to whether or not he had a con- fession Ue said he was about to take a walk in tue afternoon, and c^-P-^ei^^-i.j^e supposi- tion that the rumor above referred to grew out , of the fact of his taking the precaution to cure his co'd by staying at home for a few days; and also /poke of a desire to learn who the persons were that started the rumor for whom, he intiimited, he would make it warm He thought it terrible that he wa'c to be hounded as he has been, but did ot care so much for himself as for his wile and ^ix children, the latter who were now s'anirg into the worl-l for themselves, and ^■ho were suffering badly from the stigma placed upon him by the public although twelve intelligent men had honorably acquit- cd bin of thf charge of murder.
