About this work

Description

Progressive multifocal leukencephalopathy (PML) This is a gross specimen of a coronal slice of the brain of a patient who died with AIDS and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). On the left hand side there is widespread yellowish soft necrosis of the white matter. Note that the grey matter of the cortex is unaffected. This is a very characteristic appearance of PML, which is caused by JC virus.
