Biographical note

Pontecorvo's research trip was supported by the Royal Society. The purpose of the trip was a botanical visit to the mountains of the North West of Mongolia to conduct research on high mountain vegetation. Pontecorvo originally planned to visit in July 1991 but this had to be postponed until summer 1992 due to the "difficulties with communication". Pontecorvo had to cancel his 1992 trip due to developing pneumonia in June 1992.
