Biographical note

The Committee on Energy and Commerce was established in 1795, and is one of the oldest continuously-operating Committees of the House of Representatives. It advises on matters relating to the promotion of commerce, consumer protection, public health and, since 1981, energy. It was previously known (since 1891) as the Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce.
