About this work

Description

Three figures are depicted on a gold ground. A Franciscan monk on the left is holding a book and a lance with a furled pennant and is accompanied by a dog. He may be Saint John of Capestrano (1386-1456), who is depicted holding a standard: the standard represents his leadership of Christian forces against the Turks in Serbia and elsewhere (Réau, loc. cit.). The woman in the centre is holding a tooth in a pair of pincers in one hand and in the other another tooth between her fingers: the iconography is of Saint Apollonia, though a saint representing the defense of Europe against the Turks might be expected instead. On the right, a man wearing armour is holding a sword and a golden shield: he may be Janos (John) Hunyadi (ca. 1407-1456) Governor of Transylvania, regent of Hungary, military defender of Eastern Europe against Turkish troops, and patron of Saint John of Capestrano
