About this work

Description

The old woman is perhaps teaching magic to her daughter. The original Teniers painting is lost but it has also been preserved in a print by Aliamet (see frame no. 26326), which does not show this scene with the old and younger woman, but rather just the old woman preparing a concoction. On the right a young naked woman is seen surrounded by old witches and demons, preparing to ascend the chimney
