There were no neo-natal deaths and only one death in an infant under one year of age. This was due to gastro-enteritis. A satisfactory feature is that there were no maternal deaths. The’ total number of deaths from all ages exceeded those for 1957 by 27 while the Standardised Death Rate was lower than that of the County of Hertford and of England and Wales as a whole. Causes of Death Coronary Disease and other types of Heart Disease accounted for 43 out of the total of 119 deaths, giving the very high percentage of 36.9. Malignancy in various forms was responsible for 24 deaths. Infectious Diseases With regard to infectious diseases the health of the District was good. The highest incidence was that of measles of which there were only 42 cases and only 1 case of non-paralytic poliomyelitis was reported during the- year. There were no cases of Food Poisoning and only 1 of Sonne Dysentery. Poliomyelitis Campaign. Many poliomyelitis vaccinations were carried out during the year and in this the County Council were - greatly assisted by the individual action of local practitioners. Food Hygiene Regulations 1955-57 No prosecutions were necessary under the terms of these Regulations but the general standard of a number of food premises was improved because of recommendations made by the Public Health Inspectors. National Assistance Acts 1946-51 No action was required under Section 47 of these Acts. Housing 81 new houses were built, 50 by the Local Authority and the remaining 31 by private enterprise.
