Draft text, entitled ‘The secret pattern’, concerning Wilkins’ reaction to Rosalind Franklin’s DNA x-ray diffraction image of B form DNA, later known as ‘Photo 51’, given to him by Raymond Gosling, Jan 1953. Aspects of this account were used in chapter 8, ‘The double helix’, in Wilkins’ autobiography, The third man of the double helix (Oxford University Press, 2003).
