Biographical note

American astronomer. An expert on the sun and a pioneer in spectrum analysis. Discovered the reversing layer of the solar atmosphere and proved the gaseous nature of the sun's corona. Organised expeditions to solar eclipses all over the world to observe the spectrum of the sun and photograph solar prominences in full sunlight. Professor in Astronomy from 1857 at Western Reserve College, from 1866 at Dartmouth College and between 1877 and 1905 at Princeton University, New Jersey. His book The Sun, 1881, went into numerous editions and languages and he also wrote authoritative text books on astronomy, 1890-1891. He was admired as a brilliant teacher and nick-named 'twinkle' by his undergraduate students and colleagues at Princeton University.
