About this work

Description

Presented by Jeremy Vine, this programme looks at lack of trust in the current NHS system, particularly amongst elderly patients. NHS hospitals assess themselves so how can we be sure which hospitals are failing and which are succeeding? Simon Boazman reports. We hear about how both Basildon and Mid Staffordshire Hospitals were rated good and fair by the government but were later proven to have been the cause of thousands of unnessecary deaths. Now, another hospital, Tameside General Hospital, has come into the news as being potentially dangerous to patients. Professor Brian Jarman talks about mortality ratios which are very high at Tameside General Hospital and surgeon at the hospital, Milton Pena, confirms many of the fears about it. Patients who have lost relatives at the hospital describe the problems with the care of their loved one. We hear in detail about what happened at Mid Staffordshire Hospital. Troublingly Jarman had been sending repeated warnings to the hospital which they ignored; meanwhile, the moderator rated the hospital as 'fair.' Problems in self-assessment are clearly at the root of many of the problems.
