About this work

Description

Ben Fogle travels to Africa and follows the work of a group of top craniofacial surgeons as they help children with noma (gangrenous stomatitis or cancrum oris), a gangrenous disease which destroys the face. Doctor LeRoux Fourie describes what the condition is and how it destroys the face. Fogle and a guide travel to Ethiopia and find a number of children affected by noma. We see where and how they live and the effects of the deformity on their lives is explained. The children are gathered in a health centre together and the surgeons arrive from London. There are over 50 children hoping for surgery and the surgeons have to select which children they can realistically help in the amount of time they have. The surgical procedures are shown in detail and the surgeons explain what they are doing.
