Description

A small collection of miscellaneous documents in Latin, 1651-1807.

1. Fragment apparently from a German album amicorum of one Justus Bertram, 1651-1653.

2. A detached decorated leaf, apparently from an album amicorum, bearing a verse inscribed by Mumme Lüddens, Leiden, 21 April 1683.

3. Unidentified Latin entries in a cursive hand. 1 bifolium, n.d. [17th century].

4. Paper bearing model wording for a certificate of attendance at lectures by [François] Afforty, professor of Materia Medica, Paris, between Martinmas [11 November] 1717 and the vigil of the feast of St Peter and St Paul [28 June] 1718. Paris, 27 June 1718. Signed by Afforty.

5. Letter from Adam Friedrich Glafey (1692-1753), German historian and philosopher, to Christian Gottlieb Schwarz (1675-1751), professor of Philosopher and History, Altdorf, presenting a copy of his book Specimen decadem sigillorum complexum, quibus historiam Italiae potissimum illustrare (Leipzig, 1749). ?Lyons, 15 October 1748.

6. 'De Animae libertate': anonymous philosophical essay on free will. 2 ff., endorsed 'Pro Animae libertate Dissertatio 1807'. The bifolium is annotated in the top right-hand corner of the first page 'aut. del Doctor Falcioni' in a contemporary hand. It has not been possible to identify this Falcionus or Falcione.

7. Latin epigram ascribed to a certain Dr Schwarzenberg: 'medico saepe aegrum magis, ac morbum nosse prodest'. N.d. [?early 19th century].

Acquisition note

Nos 1, 2 and 5 were acquired at auction in London, at Glendining's in September and Sotheby's in November 1933 respectively (accs 67769 and 67468 respectively); document 4 was purchased from an unknown Parisian dealer in April 1930 (acc.67391); no.7 was purchased from Mrs Watson of Burnley, in March 1945 (aac.72200). The provenance of document 3 is unknown.

Ownership note

Document 6, which bears no accession number, has the number 1442 written in the top right-hand corner in red crayon; this seems to be an identification number belonging to a former owner (cf. MS.9259).
