Reproduction note

The composition is derived from a similar group portrait by A. Barrère: see Wellcome Library no. 575240i. The present print retains the basic composition and the torsoes of Barrère's print, but changes the heads, omits the tall figure who would be behind Schaeffer, and adds two others (Appleman and Tuttle) The fact that Tuttle is an added figure does not explain why he is shown as thickset whereas Wagner (ed.) pp. 167-8 describes him as "a tall, thin, moustached man"
