Heinrich Wirings (or Wiring, or Wirrich) appears to be a name used by the Cologne publisher Peter Overradt (Overadt, Overatt, Ourradt) to represent the author of engravings copied after, or emulating the style of, Hieronymus Wierix (Nagler, loc. cit.). The engraving on which the composition of the present painting is based is attributed to him on the evidence of an impression with lettering in Dutch above and German below in the Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel (no. IE 126, as by Heinrich Wirich). An engraving by him of Saint Catherine is signed on the plate "Heinrich Wirings fecit" (impression in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Braunschweig)
