    female patients, distributed through a large extent of building, and a consider¬ able number of whom are liable to excitement. All the baths and water-closets (which were quite free from any disagreeable smell) have been altered, and four floors have been relaid owing to the dry rot. We are glad to learn that a steam-engine has been ordered for the purpose of raising water. This will supersede the necessity of employing the male patients at the capstan pump, which is in our opinion an objectionable mode of labour for them. The shower-baths have places in each for the admission of light and air. We recommend that jugs and basins be placed in dormitories, and the patients be induced, and if necessary taught, to wash and dress themselves, and keep their persons neat and in good order. Some of the patients go out beyond the limits of the premises once, and often twice, a week. We think that this extended exercise may be adopted more frequently, and may include a greater number of patients. Upon the whole, the Asylum is in a very creditable condition. B. W.
