    however this maybe, we know for certain, that the application of cold to the human body does in many inftances produce fymptoms limilar to thofe we (hall prefently defcribe, and it is not at all improbable, but that the large quantity of rain which fell might caufe fuch a great degree of evaporation from the fur- face of the earth as to produce a cold fufficient to conftringe the pores on the furface of the body, and the great confcnt between the exhalation from the lungs and the cutaneous perfpiration may ac- count for its particular determina- tion to thofe parts.* The ments made at Briflol by my ingenious friend, Mr. Beckett it appears that the air, at the time when the difeafe raged moft, contained no more phlogifton than what is ufual. * There are few people who have not at fome period or ether of their lives been fenfible of the effefts of cold, par- ticularly when joined with moifture ; in^many a Coryza will be produced in a few minutes by lying in damp flieets, fitting in a wet room, or Handing near wet linen ; the ef- fefts here evidently arifc from the cold afting on the fur- face of the body.
