About this work

Description

At some stage the cartouche which in pictures of St Jerome bears a "memento mori"-type motto was inscribed with the name of Richard Caldwell, physician and co-founder of the Lumleian Lectures at the Royal College of Physicians of London, and thereby turned into a supposed portrait of him: see W. Munk, The roll of the Royal College of Physicians of London, I, London 1878, pp. 59-61
