Description

Mary Brotherton encounters Old Sally, a woman who lives on the moor outside the Deep Valley factory. She had escaped from the factory to live in a hole and pray to the sun to be so kind as not to wake her the next morning. She is described as "A poor frail shattered remnant of humanity with a disordered wit" and as "the maniac" (p. 41; her story p. 42)
