About this work

Description

The composition is the same as a painting made by Procaccini for the church of San Fedele in Milan (subsequently in the Borromeo collection). "Camillo etched an image of remarkable tonal unity and drama. Drawing with freedom and variety, Procaccini evoked the figure of Christ with short flicks of the etching needle and quickly defined the massive, strongly-lit Apostles with long strokes and modulated cross-hatching. Even the technical faults of crude polishing of the plate and of its uneven biting happily, if accidentally, contribute to the convincing depiction of atmosphere and event"--Neilson, loc. cit.
