About this work

Description

Xiuzhen miyao, a gymnastic (daoyin/qigong) text of unknown origin, was rediscovered and published with a preface by Wang Zai in 1513 (8th year of the Zhengde reign period of the Ming dynasty). It records 49 exercises. This illustration depicts Chen Tuan shui gong (The recumbent practice of Chen Tuan), a technique that can aid the digestion. It is practised as follows: One lies on one's back with the body straight. One passes both hands back and forth over the chest and abdomen, moving one's gong power -- 'crossing the river and stirring up the sea' - and circulates Qi for 6 breaths.
