    APPENDIX XVI. TESTIMONIAL TO WILLIAM SANDS COX, F.R.S. Circular of the Committee.—1857. At a public meeting, held at Queen's College, Birmingham, on Monday, March the 16th, the Mayor, John Ratcliff, Esq., in the Chair: In opening the proceedings, The Mayor adverted to the eminent services which Mr. Sands Cox had rendered to the town. Those services had extended over a period of upwards of thirty-five years, and to his indefatigable and unwearied exer- tions were mainly owing the foundation of two institutions which were alike honourable to himself and to Birmingham— Queen's College, and the Queen's Hospital. These institutions were not only a great benefit to the town and Midland Dis- tricts, but their efficiency was recognised throughout the country. This he had not done without a large amount of self-sacrifice. The reputation of Mr. Sands Cox as a surgeon was not known in Birmingham alone, but throughout the length and breadth of the land; and there could be no doubt that if he had confined himself to his professional duties, he would have amassed a large fortune, but instead of doing so, he had exerted himself nobly and disinterestedly for the good of others; and he (the Mayor) thought that the time was come when a general effort shonld be made to raise a testimonial worthy of the man and of the cause for which he had laboured.
