The appendix contains, among other matter elucidatory of the text, some considerations showing the absence among ourselves of a number of powerful levers whicli in Germany are utilized in working the higher-school and university system. For this appendix, and for the notes throughout the book marked with brackets [ ], the translator is re- sponsible. The translator desires in conclusion to take this opportu- nity of expressing his obligations to his colleague, Ur.
