About this work

Description

Documentary presented by Sir Paul Nurse following the treatment of 3 cancer patients. Joshua Simmonds, aged 3, has chemotherapy to shrink the size of his kidney cancer so that it can be operated on. Mitch Baynes has Chronic Myeloid Leukemia and takes a new, experimental drug called anti-Veg-F to try and control it. Jeff Landers has cancer of the kidney that has spread to his abdomen and chest. He takes another new drug called Cleevec to control the cancer. The programme explains clearly and simply how cancer cells multiply and includes several magnified images of this. Research at the Cancer Genome Project in Cambridge is shown. Unfortunately, Mitch Baynes died before this programme was transmitted, but this is a fitting tribute to him and other cancer patients who take part in trials of new drugs to treat their conditions. The programme concludes with Paul Nurse saying that the future of cancer treatment is full of potential and promise.
