Lettering

Le medecin. Der Medicus. Le peche ... mit Andacht zu ihr wende?

Lettering note

Lettered with two stanzas, one in French and the other in German, as spoken by the physician: Le peche, l'ennemi de l'ame et de la vie, Qui est environné de mainte maladie Rempli le cofre aux medecins Ceux qui se portent mal payent mes ordon(n)ances, Et me produisent des finances, Pour avoir entendus quelques grands mots Latins.
Translation of the French text: Sin, the enemy of the soul and of life, and which is surrounded by every kind of sickness, fills the money-chest for physicians. Those who behave badly pay for my prescriptions and produce money for me, [just] for having had some long Latin words spoken to them
Translation of the German text: Misery, illness and death arise from sin: many thousands does it bring [to me] from sickbeds and deathbeds. Certain it is that I would often not [even] have dry bread if there were no intemperance, love or rage. [But] sin drives the prey into my hands. No wonder I turn to you with attention!
