When, in the early days of vaccination. Small Pox fol- lowed, and contradicted the assertions of the vaccinators, tiien the phraze was, as at Oxford, The Cow Pox did not take. Here appears confession of unce7'taintif, and uncertainty seals the condemnation of Cow-pox inoculation.— Small-pox inoculation is perfectly safe and certain, securely permanent, and does generally take as many millions, nay myriads of living instances testify. EXCUSE II. When a number of instances happened of Small Pox after vaccination, then it was boldly asserted, by way of palliation, that there zoas a spurious Cow Pox. Another proof of excuse for uncertainty, of course another con- demnation. These excuses are but wretched shelters where the infallibility of Cow-pox inoculation had been trumpeted forth with such vehement vociferation, with such brow- beating confidence, by the promulgators of the practice. They are certainly inadmissible to all reflecting and reason- ing minds, and sufficiently powerful to condemn the prac- tice in toto, without any farther hearing, but in this in- quiry, every latitude of indulgence shall be given to vac- cination to plead its own cause.
